Sacrament Information

Sacrament of Baptism:
Baptism is the sacrament of faith.  But faith needs the community of believers.  It is only within the faith of the Church that each of the faithful can believe.  (The Catechism of the Catholic Church, article 1253.)  Because the community of believers nurtures faith, it is during parish celebrations where an infant or an adult is born into God's family.  Baptism is not a private affair, but a communal act of birth with the support of the faithful.  For this reason, we celebrate all baptisms in St. Paul parish during Weekend Eucharistic celebrations.

A Saturday "Baptism Retreat" precedes the celebration of baptism.  We conduct the "Baptism Retreat" from 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. quarterly in St. Pius X Parish Hall.  For more information, and to prepare your child for baptism, call the parish office at 719 542-4264.

All godparents must be practicing Catholics who are baptized, confirmed, and have made their First Reconciliation and First Communion.  If the godparents are married, they must be married through the Catholic Church.

The upcoming Baptism Retreats are scheduled for:

  • April 26, 2008.
If you have a child under the age of seven who needs to be baptized, we invite you to attend our next preparation class on October 20th from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the parish hall.  Baptism packets can be picked up in the parish office.

Sacrament of Confirmation:

High School & Confirmation registration forms were mailed this past week.  If you didn't receive one please contact Bobbie Jo at 542-4264.  They are also available in the church foyer.

The sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season each year.  Candidates for Confirmation are to participate in the regular High School of Religion Classes and discussions for two years prior to their confirmation acceptance.  In addition, they must participate in the annual Confirmation Retreat and be at least 16.  All our classes are "clustered" with St. Pius X parish and students from Sacred Heart Cathedral, Pueblo.  For information, contact our parish office at 719 542-4264.

Sacrament of Marriage:

Persons planning to marry in the Catholic Church are required by diocesan law to prepare no less than one year prior to their intended wedding.  The wedding date cannot be set until all the paperwork is completed.  This paperwork includes information about the sacramental status of the bride and groom as well as obtaining any annulments of any previous marriage.  If an annulment is required because of a previous marriage, it is not an automatic "given" that the church will grant such an annulment.

Spiritual preparation for this sacrament is the most important element to the reception of Marriage.  Engaged couples are requested to call 542-4264 to arrange for instruction as soon as they become engaged.  This must precede setting the date for the wedding as well as before engaging a reception hall for the wedding reception.  This is a holy and serious sacrament.  Prior to the wedding day, parties to be married are to partake in the Sacrament of Reconciliation to obtain the full graces of this sacrament.

Marriage Preparation Ministry

Our Parish is need of two or more Marriage Prep Lead Couples.  This is a ministry focused on engaged couples that are anticipating the sacrament of Marriage.  The Church desires that these couples have the opportunity to journey with a married couple through the reality and challenges or marriage.  Lead Couples share examples of their own marriage with the insights provided through instruction given by the Deanery.  Please contact the office as soon as possible at 542-4264.

Sacrament of the Sick:

The Anointing of the Sick "is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death.  Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived."  (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1514)

In addition to the Anointing of the Sick, the Church offers those who are about to leave this life the Eucharist as viaticum, i.e. food for the journey into the next life.  "The sacrament of Christ once dead and now risen, the Eucharist is here the sacrament of passing over from death to life, from this world to the Father."  (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1524)
